Tehran, 27 March, 2008 (AKI) - Iranian trade unionist Mahmoud Salehi is still in jail despite completing his sentence at Sanandaj prison in northwestern Iran.

Salehi, (photo) founded a bakers’ union in Iranian Kurdistan and at the time of his arrest in 2004, was trying to set up Iran’s first national bakers’ union.

He began serving a one-year prison sentence on 9 April, 2007, after being convicted of “conspiring to commit crimes against national security”.

On 6 March international trade unions called a global day of action to express solidarity for Salehi who had begun a hunger strike at the prison where he is being held.

The international day of action was also in support of Mansour Osanloo, another trade unionist jailed by the Tehran regime.

A committee for the liberation of the trade unionist has organised a protest for next Saturday in front of the jail where Salehi is detained.
