Iran: A bad year for human rights, say activists There are at least 70 young people on death row who at the time of their arrest were under the age of 16. In the past 12 months, Iranian organisations claim that 80 feminists have been arrested and 20 of them have been sentenced from three to five years in jail. A total of 54 journalists have ended up in prison, several were released without trial after serving jail time, while others remain behind bars. In the past 12 months, 34 newspapers and magazines, among them the feminist magazine Zanan, have been shut down.
Disclosing statement of suffering by the families of Tavakoli, Ghasaban and Mansouri: Details of the torture of Polytechnic university students The families of Majid Tavakoli, Ahmad Ghasaban, and Ehsan Mansouri are releasing a Disclosing Statement of suffering to Ayatollah Hashemi Shadroudi, in an attempt to reveal what has happed to these three students while in prison. This letter states that 80 days after the trial of these three individuals, they are enduring mental and physical injuries as a result of being imprisoned and it has been requested of the judiciary to report on their condition.
Jail no deterrent for Iranian women’s rights activists Western diplomats and rights groups see the detention of women activists as part of a wider crackdown on dissent, which they say may be in response to Western pressure over Iran’s nuclear work. Iranian authorities have also clamped down on "immoral behaviour", including women flouting the strict Islamic dress code, since Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won the presidency in 2005 with his pledge to revive revolutionary values. The women's rights activists say their campaign is not focused on what they wear, even if outsiders see conservative dress codes as a symbolic and visible barrier to equality.
Author jailed for writing ethnic romance as Iran’s censors crack down on dissent A television presenter got into hot water for writing a poem which said "in my dreams I think of you in the middle of the night" because of perceived sexual innuendo. The verse was removed. On 6 March, the general director of public libraries, Mansour Vaezi, warned a conference of library directors that their libraries would be purged of inappropriate works. Academic freedom has also been severely restricted in the three years since President Ahmadinejad came to power. University faculty members deemed to be “problematic” are being forced into retirement, and even sacked.
Tyranny in Tehran A close associate of the men told me they had undergone marathon interrogation sessions lasting up to 48 hours and frequently involving severe beatings. Interrogation teams of up to eight men have subjected the students to physical assaults interspersed with insults and psychological abuse. The students have been made to lie on the floor while interrogators stood on their backs. They are also said to have been beaten with electric cables. When they fainted from stress, the interrogators revived them by throwing cold water over them.

Year 86 was a year full of up and downs lots of turbulence and filled with small to large scaled events. A brief review of student’s movements and events in last year, apparent the fact that in year 86 there were only few days with no events or activities happening at universities. More than 210 gatherings and protests in last year was an honor for the student’ motion. Furthermore, last year was a year full of pressure, privation, limitation, arrest, torture and tough issued sentences for students. Last year 95 students has been arrested for at least one week, among them Saeid Derakhsahndi, Abolfazl Jahandar, Ehsan Mansouri, Majid Tavakoli, Ahmad Ghasaban and Yaghoob Mehrnahad have been in prison for almost all days of last year and are still in prison.
The family of Majid Tavakoli, Ahmad Ghasaban, and Ehsan Mansoori, the three students who have been arrested a year ago, wrote a complain letter to the chief of highest court and explained that despite of the 80 million bail, the authorities are denying their children release. In their letter they asked for justice for their children and the law to be applied in their case. Before hand the families have written many letters to authorities and explained their children’s situation, but didn’t get any answer back. All of these are happening while the family contacted the head of justice department in Tehran, Alireza Avaee, has promised to follow up their case and resolve their problem. But there has not been any action taken place.
Since starting of the social security plan; harsh attitude of the disciplinary force with people is extended to streets and alleys. Again, another video showing savagery of the disciplinary force to despising Iranian youth was broadcasted. In this video, two disciplinary force officers, beat and curse a youth and cut his hair with stone strokes. Continuing the savagery attitude; the disciplinary force officers, fire up the frightened boy hair using a lighter. While Ahmadinezhad calls Iran the freest country in the world and legally charged people calls Iran a pattern for other countries human rights, the effort for despising this young boy represents the true fact of suppressing the youth in Iran.
Prisoner student’s families, accompanied with few political and students activists, celebrated the start of Persian New Year in front of Evin, the prison in which students are tortured. Prior to this some of prisoner student’s families such as Ehsan Mansoori, Ahmad Ghasaban, Majid Tavakoli, Sabah Nasri, Hedayat Ghazali, Saeid Feizolahzadeh, Abolfazl Jahandar, Saeid Derakhshandi, Behrouz Karimizadeh, Peyman Piran and Ali Kantoori announced that this year they will set their seven 'S's in front of Evin Prison.
While the students have chosen next Sunday (March 10, 2008) as deadline for fulfillment of their requests, the students of the Shiraz University are spending their 9th day of strike. Continuing the strike, they still insist on their main request, which is dismissal of Sadeqi, the president of the University. Meanwhile, Sadeqi has sent letters to deans of different departments, asking for their support. The students have denounced the skeptical governmental reports regarding their strike, and announced their full support of the alleged students who have been faced with several charges by the Revolutionary court.
