Beginning of Revengeful Acts, Hossein Bastani one must not forget that one aspect of “security” cases is the image that they carry for the groups that advance such issues. Therefore, before fake charges take to the news-media and become public, those who have had a hand in arresting the students must be weakened. Otherwise, after the severe charges are made public, repeated and are tied to the image of the actors, even the intervention of the head of the judiciary (as history demonstrates) cannot be of much help to the detainees.
What Makes Executions Possible, Asieh Amini How can we tell the judiciary officials of Iran that according to law juveniles can stay alive and continue to live with appropriate and suitable punishment? How must one make this request from the judiciary a public and wide-spread demand and point out that killing a juvenile who has not wholeheartedly committed an act does not solve any of the real problems facing the country?
A Warning to Iran’s Student Movement, Hossein Bastani it is easy to predict that the success of student activists in imposing their will and demands on government officials at academic institutions, such as the Teachers Training college and Zanjan University (where the students boldly took the initiative into their own hands), would result in a backlash by extreme right-wing officials who would plan an “instructive” counter-attack against the student movement.Hopefully such a reaction will not come. But from an analytic perspective, one must not negate it altogether.
The Image of the Regime? Omid Memarian This is the reason that the moment imprisoned students step out of prison, it becomes clear to every one why they were put behind bars: for simply criticizing the president. It becomes instantly clear why they were subjected to interrogations and what questions were asked of them. These are the events that portray the image of this country. Students, social activists and journalists are certainly not on the list of those that dent this image. The publication of the arrest of students because of their criticism of the president brings forth a caricature image of Mahmud Ahmadinejad which does not match the claims that he made at Columbia University or the image that the regime strives to present about its standing.
Iran: A Bad Year for Human Rights, Say Activists There are at least 70 young people on death row who at the time of their arrest were under the age of 16. In the past 12 months, Iranian organisations claim that 80 feminists have been arrested and 20 of them have been sentenced from three to five years in jail. A total of 54 journalists have ended up in prison, several were released without trial after serving jail time, while others remain behind bars. In the past 12 months, 34 newspapers and magazines, among them the feminist magazine Zanan, have been shut down.

With the approach of 9th anniversary of 18 Tir (9 July 1999), overally 11 students arrested by the security forces in Tehran and Mashhad. Ali Gholizadeh, Shahrood University student, Ali Saberi, Amirkabir University student, Ashkan Arshia and Mehdi Ghodsi Ferdowsi University student, Reza Arab the Arshia, Mazandaran University student, are members of the Arbitrary Detention Committee in Mashhad. In Tehran, also, Mehdi khodaei and Salman Sima two student of Azad University together with Majid Asadi the students of Alame Tabatabaei University were detained during this week in Tehran. So the number of the arrested students reached 13 on the threshold of 18 Tir (9 July 1999).
The attempt of the University Professor and head of administration office (vice chancellor) of the University of Zanjan, Hassan Madadi, to offend a female student was revealed by students. On Sunday 15 June, the female student had been called to his office over a disciplinary hearing. She realized the intention of the professor and informed the other students. So, on the due date they broke into the vice president’s office and handed him over to the university guard office (a disciplinary body which monitors students’ activities). As soon as the other students knew about this happening, gathered in sport hall of the campus.
The hunger strike of the students of Tarbiat Moalem University of Karaj started in 29th May in protest to the educational and welfare problems, bad condition of student’s food and the pressures of security guard of the university on students. on Saturday, 31th May the students continued their protest in the University campus in Karaj.
During all 12 days totally 126 students joined to the hunger strike program whose 40 of them moved to hospital for physical weakness caused by strike. The hunger strikers spent all12 days in the campus even at nights.
On Monday 19 May 2008, at the first anniversary of the Polytechnic University Students arrest, Majid Tavakoli, Ehsan Mansuri and Ahmad Ghassaban, a meeting was held by "the Committee of the Arbitrary Detention". The families of the arrested students, students of different universities, some political activists and lawyers participated in this meeting. Ali Nikoonesbati, who was recently sentenced to 5 months imprisonment, was first speaker of this meeting. He pointed out the judicial cases of some student activists with many ambiguities in investigation and legal proceedings.
Despite not having any reliable evidence against students, Saedi, the judge of appeal court, finalized jail sentences for three innocent students of Amirkabir University, Majid Tavakoli, Ehsan Mansoori and Ahmad Ghasaban, under the pressure of intelligence ministry and the prosecutor of Tehran. Based on the appeal court sentence announced today, the sentence of 3 years of jail for Majid Tavakoli, 2 years and half for Ahamad Ghasaban and 2 years for Ehsan Mansoori passed by revolution court, is finalized, but due to the young age of the accused and having no criminal record; he commuted the sentence to one year and half for Tavakoli, one year and two months for Ghasaban and ten months for Mansoori.
